R5 Pharmaceuticals

R5 is the leading provider of clinical pharmaceutical dosage forms development in Europe.

From our base at BioCity Nottingham where we have 20,000 sq ft of labs and offices, we are developing most types of dosage forms. Our typical customer has API emerging from preclinical studies and requires GMP products and data to support Phase 1 and phase 2 studies. We support the following dosage forms:

  • Tablets: Instant Release, Controlled Release, and Coated products
  • Capsules: Powder fill and Liquid Fill
  • Powders : Sachet products, powders for reconstitution
  • Liquids, Solutions and Suspensions
  • Injectables (1) Aseptic Manufacture of Vials, prefilled syringes and LVPs
  • Injectables (2) Terminally sterilised ampoules and vials and LVPs
  • Inhaled Products (DPI)

R5 was established at BioCity in Nottingham to provide a scentifically based formulation development, analytical chemistry and GMP service to the global biotech and pharmaceutical industry. R5 is a subsidary of Aesica Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

Non-Executive Chairman 
 As Aesica's Chief Executive Officer, Robert led the management team which founded Aesica through the management buyout of BASF's UK API business at Cramlington in 2004. He has over 20 years experience in the pharmaceutical industry. Robert has a BSc (Hons) and PhD from the University of Nottingham.

Managing Director
A chemist by training, with 30 years of experience in the development and manufacture of pharmaceuticals. Paul joined Wellcome to work extensively on projects in Industrial Pharmacy in the Pharmaceutical Development Laboratory. During this time Paul helped set up pharmaceutical manufacturing at Wellcome plants in Africa and South America. He left Wellcome in 1996 to join Quintiles as Senior Director, Business Development in Scotland, staying north of the border in 2002 as General Manager of Encap Drug Delivery. He is a founder director of R5.

Ian Lafferty

Chief Technical Officer 
Ian was Manufacturing Director for six years at Nova Laboratories (specialising in sterile product development and manufacture) immediately prior to him joining R5. He has always worked in dosage form development and has considerable experience across most dosage forms during positions with West, AZ and MSD. He completed his PhD at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, DeMonford University, UK.

Janette Waterhouse

Dr Janette Waterhouse PhD, FRSC, C.Chem, Eur Chem.
Chief Operations Officer
An analytical chemist by training, Janette has worked as an Executive Director in the contract analytical business for both Quintiles, Edinburgh and Cardinal Healthcare. She successfully created and grew the Pharmaceutical Analysis department at Quintiles to over 100 staff in five years. Janette has also conducted transfers and lab audits worldwide as the Analytical International Technical Executive at Glaxowellcome, designing new labs internationally. More recently Janette has been working as a consultant with an Eastern European pharmaceutical company co-ordinating their analytical transfers. She is a founder director of R5.

Paul Nicholson

Non Executive Finance Director 
A chartered accountant, Paul qualified with and work for PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in Newcastle upon Tyne for 9 years. Paul joined Aesica in 2007 having spent three years in senior finance roles within the motor industry. Paul has a BA (Hons) from Oxford University.
 

 John McConnell

Non Executive HR Director
John joined Aesica in 2006 from Aker Kvaerner where he was HR Director of the Engineering Services business. He has extensive senior HR experience in the chemicals, pharmaceuticals and utilities sectors and worked with Elementis plc as the global HR director for eight years prior to joining Aesica.
